Sophie Gee at Downstage Theatre

Dates: Four days between July 6-17, 2026.

Deadline: June 30, 2026.

LOOKING FOR PROFESSIONAL AND NON-PROFESSIONAL ACTORS FOR A PAID THEATRE EXPLORATION

Hello, my name is Sophie Gee. I am a theatre director and creator based in Tiohtià:ke/Montreal. I will be coming to Calgary for two weeks in July (6-17 July) to work with Downstage Theatre on my next show, People have to eat, which broadly, is about the environment, immigration and jobs.

The piece also looks at my relationship between my father, a mechanic who immigrated from Malaysia to work in the oil sands in the 70s, and myself, a theatre artist. It is also a way for the two of us to understand each other across cultures, professions, generations, and differing views on the climate crisis.

While in Calgary, I plan to work with newcomers to Canada during a four day exploration. We will explore the tension between the environment and jobs through partially staging scenes from the play An Enemy of the People and excerpts from public consultations, activist speeches and politicians' speeches. Theatre experience is not required but being comfortable expressing yourself in English and an openess in taking part in theatre exploration and discussions is. I am not looking only for actors, artists from all disciplines are welcome. This is paid $20 an hour for 7 hour days (one hour unpaid lunch break) for four days between July 6-17).

For more information about the show, here is a 10-minute pitch my father and I performed. https://youtu.be/PvxnFnZVAK8?si=GfeHEWB0KfEXbpjg

HOW TO APPLY: if you are interested, please email me at gee.sophie@gmail.com with an introduction about yourself (where are you from and what is your main artistic practice) and your availability.

I will confirm participants by July 3, 2026.
